Cypress Announces Field Programmable Zero Delay Buffer

High-Performance Clock Distribution Device Optimized for High-End Networking and Data Communications Systems with Multiple Clock Frequencies

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 2003-- Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:CY), the world leader in timing technology solutions, today announced volume production of its field programmable zero delay buffer (CY23FP12). The CY23FP12 is a high-performance, 200MHz clock distribution device featuring a flexible architecture that can be customized to fit a wide range of applications. The single chip, which incorporates the functionality of an entire clock distribution portfolio, is implemented on Cypress's proprietary non-volatile silicon oxide nitride oxide silicon (SONOS) technology and is fully programmable via manufacturing facility or desktop programmers.

The CY23FP12 enables the user to define an application-specific clock distribution device with up to 12 outputs, customized input and output dividers, feedback topology (internal/external), output inversions for differential operation, and output drive strengths as well as a variety of other functional and performance characteristics. For additional flexibility, the user can mix and match multiple functions. This feature enables implementation of a number of distinct configurations, all of which are selectable via control bits on a single, programmed device. Cypress's field programmable zero delay buffers also feature a proprietary circuit which shuts down the device in case of a reference clock source failure, thereby simplifying power-down schemes.

"Cypress has drawn upon its success in programmable clock generators to seize the lead in the clock distribution arena," said Tunc Cenger, marketing manager for Cypress's Timing Technology Division. "Our programmable zero-delay buffer enables our customers to create a custom device that can be reprogrammed as many times as needed from their desktop computer or manufacturing facility using our easy-to-use CyberClocks(TM) development software. The combination of the CY23FP12 and the CyberClocks design suite simplifies clock tree design and improves inventory management."

Cypress is providing a complete timing solution with its innovative CyberClocks timing development tool suite, which supports Cypress's full line of programmable clocks. The CyberClocks software provides a real-time simulation environment for the CY23FP12 and computes the best timing configuration for a given design challenge.

Pricing and Availability

The CY23FP12 is available now in a 28-pin SSOP. Pricing starts at $4.75 per unit in quantities of 25,000. The CY23IP08 version, offering in-system volatile programmability via an industry-standard I2C interface, is sampling now in a 16-pin TSSOP. Pricing for the CY23IP08 starts at $4.25 per unit in quantities of 25,000.

About CyberClocks(TM) Development Software

CyberClocks(TM) simplifies timing design by introducing a "black-box" approach to configuring programmable clocks. While traditional software models cater to engineers who understand phase-locked loop (PLL) technology, the black-box approach of CyberClocks enables anyone, without any knowledge of the workings of a PLL, to simply specify input and output clock requirements and allow CyberClocks to select the best configuration. CyberClocks software performs exhaustive computation on the requirements and optimizes the results to meet all the performance parameters set by the designer. The embedded design rule checking of the CyberClocks software ensures that the PLL system achieves stability under all valid programming conditions and data sheet parameters. CyberClocks(TM) integrates Cypress's entire suite of timing software tools (CyClocksRT(TM), CyClocks(TM), and RoboConfig(TM)) into one easy-to-use package.

CyberClocks software is free and can be downloaded off the web today at http://www.cypress.com/support. Select Software then Programmable Clocks.
